I realize Louis C.K. states in his new tour that the word “hilarious” is extremely overused in which its meaning no longer even comes into play, as in “You saw Lisa last night? That’s hilarious!” But Louis C.K. was exactly that – “hilarious” – just like the name of his current tour.
Hilarious, Louis explained, means “so funny that it takes one to the brink of going insane”. For the sold out crowd at Chicago’s Vic Theatre, it’s doubtful anyone would disagree that would be the word to describe his show.
Performing for just over an hour and a half, Louis’ comedy assault was fast and furious. Covering such topics as his twisted thought process, Kosher foods, and parenting, Louis also tapped into the dark and disgusting humor only he can pull off so well. Without getting too detailed on how sick and perverse he got, let’s just say there was plenty of feces, strange sexual absurdity and of course, Louis’ own self-deprecating humor, this time going into a five or so minute bit on his “boys”.
I really enjoyed his summary on having children. That is too say that any joy, fun or goals one may have will disappear once you have a child. “But there are new joys that come with a new child, some will say. No there’s not – those are the child’s joy, not mine.” He went on to say how having a child forces you to hang out with people you would have never wanted to in a million years, just because your kid is friends with another kid in which the only criteria that forms their friendship is the fact that they’re both small.
Louis was riffing like Kirk Hammett shreds on the guitar. He was like a machine gun with a never-ending supply of ammunition. I often found myself laughing at a joke he said minutes before while, at the same time, cracking up at something he just said. When it came to some of his bizarrely twisted scenarios, Louis’ descriptiveness and animation was so on the mark I’m sure the images will stick with me for a long time.
Having his “Chewed Up” special playing on Showtime simultaneously with his current tour, those who are not as familiar with Louis C.K. can get a good preview as to the type of humor and delivery one can expect at this very, very funny show. Though it’s unknown when Louis will return to Chicago, those in other cities should jump at the chance to see this comic when his tour hits their town.
After his performance, Louis further pleased show-goers by visiting with fans in front of the theatre, talking and taking pictures with everyone who wanted to do so. It was the perfect ending to a perfect comedy show.
