Superbowl XLVIII Recap by Rainey Featured

Man, I have so many feelings on this Super Bowl, I don't know where to start.  I KNOW the thing that disappointed me the MOST. It was the LAST game of the season and I wanted to see a GREAT game and it was not that at all. For as much as we want to see entertaining Super Bowls, this was not one of them.  

I know for the Seattle fans, it was the best game ever and they deserve that. The Seahawks stayed true to there saying to make each day a championship day. They had one of the greatest performances in an NFL title game. They won their first crown in style, leaving no doubt in anyone's mind who was the TEAM this season. The Seahawks were on a mission and they man-handled, pimp-slapped, punked and just plain ole whipped Denver's A#$. 

I was pulling for Denver, but since Seattle won I was cool with that. I just wanted to see a good game. It was a blow-out and an embarrassment for the Denver Broncos, Peyton Manning and the whole organization. 

My brother-in-law text me and said, "WTF, where the hell is Denver" I could only reply, maybe they didn't know they were playing in the Super Bowl today, if I answered at all. It was the WORSE Super Bowl I have ever watched. 


SUPER BOWL XLVIII:

DENVER BRONCOS VS. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS:

Yes, the Denver Broncos looked bad out there on Sunday. Really bad. And yes, it was a spanking that I don't think many saw coming. I haven't seen this kind of beat down in the Super Bowl in a long time. The Seahawks never gave the Broncos a chance to breathe, suffocating them from start to finish. 

The best coached team won. Russell Wilson & Company were better than anticipated. I thought they would put up a great fight and that they would lose by 3pts, boy was I wrong. Russell Wilson was the poster boy for efficiency.  Amazing pretty much sums it up. This was the day that the Seahawks could do no wrong!!

The Broncos came out struggling from the start. The early downfall came with a bad snap. Moreno smothered the ball in the end zone for a safety, 12 seconds into the game. It was the fastest score in Super Bowl history. That was the first play of the game, it was no indication at all it was the END of the game. Percy Harvin had a great game. In ONE of his many contributions, he returned the kickoff to start the 2nd half 87 yards for a TD, giving the Seahawks a 29-0 lead. I pretty much felt it was over at that point. I know the Broncos have comeback from a 20+ deficit before, but they were not playing at all, they looked terrible. I just watched in amazement. Oh, I fell asleep several times as well. 

The Broncos ran screen plays and swing passes that normally gain a good amount of yards. But, the Seahawks were so fast and saw each play like a hawk. They were catching running backs from behind. There were a ton of highlights that Seattle provided. Chancellor intercepted Manning late in the first quarter. Marshawn Lynch ran in a TD that made the score 15-0. Then you had Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith return a 69yd interception for a TD. He was named Super Bowl MVP. The score would be 36-0 before the Broncos scored. Richard Sherman left the game on crutches but a Super Bowl ring will ease the pain. 

It was what the Seahawks did to Manning that stood out. The Seahawks defensive front, led by Chris Clemons and Cliff Avril, caused Peyton to have 2 interceptions and a fumble. One of those was a pick six that made it a 22-0 game in the first half. The defensive front forced Peyton to move. He wasn't just missing open receivers. He didn't seem to know who was open. He could not get his feet set and he was kinda looking around like, who should I throw to?  He was two stepping so much I wasn't sure if it was Peyton Manning on the field or Fred Astaire. 

Michael Bennett, defensive lineman for the Seahawks said, "this is one of the best defenses to ever play the game, statistically. We're the best defense since the 85 BEARS."  The Seahawks had the best defense this season, and it made them the best team in the end.  They thumped the favored Broncos 43-8 at MetLife Stadium with hard hits, pressure, turnovers and POINTS. Russell Wilson threw for 208yds, 2 TD's. Percy. Harvin had 2 carries for 45yds. Doug Baldwin added 5 receptions for 66yds & 1 TD. Peyton Manning had 280yds & 1 TD. Demaryius Thomas had 13 receptions for 118yds and 1 TD. *Denver still owns the dubious record for MOST Super Bowls loss, now at 5. 

I read this little snippet: The Seahawks won this game 4 years ago, when Carroll arrived and brought with him the aggressive approach that made USC the best college program in America (83-19 overall, 7-1 in bowl games and two national championships). The players said that the way Pete Carroll prepares us is different from anybody in the NFL. Practice is just like a game for us. If you came out to see them practice, you would think they were crazy. The intensity, competitiveness and energy, it carries over to the game and it showed Sunday.  It made the Super Bowl just another game for the Seahawks.

MORE SUPER BOWL NEWS FROM THE PAST:

It wasn't the biggest Super Bowl loss in Broncos history. The worst rout in Super Bowl history? That title goes to Super Bowl XXIV when the San Francisco 49ers beat the snot out of, well, the Denver Broncos in the Superdome in New Orleans. That Denver squad — led at quarterback by current Broncos vice president of football operations John Elway — fell to Joe Montana's team by a staggering 45 points, in a final score of 55 to 10.

The annilination we just witnessed in Super Bowl XLVIII wasn't even the second-worst margin of defeat. That happened in January 1986, when the CHICAGO BEARS mauled the New England Patriots by 36 points in Super Bowl XX.

This Super Bowl does end in a tie for the third-worst rout in SB history, matching the lopsidedness of Super Bowl XXVII played on January 31st, 1993.  It was the Dallas Cowboys vs. Buffalo Bills. Dallas, led by Troy Aikman, beat the Bills by 35pts in a final score of 52-17.  



A FEW MORE SUPER BOWL BLOWOUTS:

 

Super Bowl XXII, 1987-88 season: The Washington Redskins captured the Lombardi Trophy in a landslide 32-point victory over, again, the Broncos, in a final score of 42-10

Super Bowl XVIII, 1983-84: The Oakland Raiders took care of business against the Redskins by 29 points. Final score: 38-9.

Super Bowl XXXV, 2000-01: The Baltimore Ravens beat the New York Giants by 27 points. Ravens 34, Giants 7.

Super Bowl XXXVII, 2002-03: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers throttled the Oakland Raiders by 27 points. Bucs 48, Raiders 21

Super Bowl I, 1966-67: Yes, even the first Super Bowl was a bit of a beatdown, as the Bart Starr-led Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs by 25 points. Final score: 35-10.
