Upcoming Theatre

Collaboraction, Chicago's social issue-driven contemporary theater, announced today its line-up of 24 world premiere short pieces for PEACEBOOK, a free, collaborative city-wide festival of theater, dance, music, visual art and spoken word, all focused on cultivating peace in Chicago.

Actor David Dastmalchian (Twin Peaks), Sandra Delgado (La Havana Madrid), GQ (Q Brothers), Kevin Coval (Louder Than a Bomb), noted director Mignon McPherson Stewart, Sir Taylor (Example Setters) and Bril Barrett (Making a Difference Dance) are among the artists and activists creating fresh new works in support of Chicago's peace movement. 

Each piece is seven minutes or less, and range from solos to large collaborations. 

In sum, the 24 "chapters" that comprise PEACEBOOK unite more than 200 artists, from household names to neighborhood peace activists, all intent on creating real connections with Chicagoans in communities around the city.
 
PEACEBOOK launches with a one-day, marathon premiere of all 24 chapters on Saturday, August 26, 2017 in the Goodman's 350-seat flexible Owen Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn St., Chicago. Show times are 3 p.m. (PEACEBOOK Englewood), 5:30 p.m. (PEACEBOOK Hermosa) and 8 p.m. (PEACEBOOK Austin).

Park performances are free. Each night features a different musical guest. Before every Saturday show is a free community meal and peace fair with panels, workshops and community organizations from a diverse array of Chicago peacemakers.
 
"In these times of rising homicides and racial tension in Chicago, we believe in the power of theater to incite empathy, knowledge, dialogue and change around peace in Chicago," said Collaboraction Artistic Director Anthony Moseley. About Collaboraction

Collaboraction (collaboraction.org) collaborates with artists, community activists, and citizens from throughout the city to create original theatrical experiences that push artistic boundaries and explore critical social issues with a diverse community of Chicagoans. Collaboraction Theatre Company announces Darkest Before Dawn: A Dark Circus of Music, Theatre and Fashion, an immersive event to raise funds for their celebrated Youth Theatre Ensemble, The Peacemakers.

The event's all-star line-up includes the DJ trio Dark Wave Disco, Black Plastic, a fashion spectacle by The Order, Kelroy, DJ Heaven Malone, The Peacemakers and Founding Collaboraction Company Member Sandra Delgado (La Havana Madrid).

General admission is $15.

Darkest Before Dawn Artist Lineup 

 
Dark Wave Disco
 
After receiving national attention from big names such as SPIN and BPM, Dark Wave became known as "one of the hottest parties in the country." Big acts like Steve Aoki and New York's notorious MisShapes all dropped in to mix sets with the new kings of the hipster set over the next two years, securing Dark Wave's notoriety and also, stellar guest list. - Chicago Scene Magazine

 

Black Plastic

A self-titled debut album was released last year on Cleopatra Records, its ten tracks filled with an indelible sense of dread combined with manifestations of dark wave and synth pop. Grady is best known as the founder of the award-winning cult magazine Lemon, which has featured collaborations with the likes of David Bowie, Daft Punk and Sonic Youth. This will be the band's first ever performance in Chicago.

 

THE ORDER
Jet-black, rebellious and compelling, THE ORDER is a conceptual women's fashion label that weaves together innovative design, high quality craftsmanship and wearability to create a powerful story that is both dark and feminine. 

 

Kelroy

Kelroy is a five piece rock band from the great Goddess Chicago. Their sound is an intense, thoughtful and unique mix of post rock psychedelia with a whole lot of mood. Dark and raw yet uplifting.

 

Sandra Delgado

Sandra Delgado is a Colombian-American actor, singer and writer born and raised in Chicago. She is a regular on the stages of the legendary Steppenwolf Theater and the Goodman Theater. She is a founding ensemble member of Collaboraction and an ensemble member of Teatro Vista, where she served as Associate Artistic Director from 2006-2008. Delgado is also on the National Steering Committee for the Latina/o Theatre Commons, an advocacy group for Latino theater artists. In 2011 she received the prestigious TCG Fox Foundation Resident Actor Fellowship in residence at the Goodman Theater in Chicago where she developed her solo show, para Graciela. She has since written and starred in her own show, La Havana Madrid, a theatrical, cinematic and musical history of Latino Caribbeans in Chicago.


Heaven Malone

Malone has DJed around the country in New York City at Girls & Boys and the notorious TRASH! party at Webster Hall in New York City, at A-list celebrity poolside hangout, Nightswim at The Hollywood Roosevelt in Los Angeles, and several Lollapalooza After Parties hosted by Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman of Breaking Bad). As "David Bowie Is...", the multi-media museum fashion exhibition of acclaimed rocker David Bowie came to Chicago, Malone DJed and produced multiple Bowie Ball events sponsored by The Museum of Contemporary Art.


About Collaboraction's Peacemaker Teen Ensemble


Led by Collaboraction Director of Youth Programming Luis Crespo, Collaboraction Peacemaker's Teen Ensemble creates original devised theater focusing on peace in Chicago. Collaboraction works with over 200 Chicago youth per year, with the most committed and passionate students advancing to Peacemakers. On the heels of critically-acclaimed sold-out runs at Steppenwolf Theatre Company and The Miracle Center in Logan Square, Teatro Vista’s La Havana Madrid by Sandra Delgado extends its run at Goodman Theatre this summer, July 21 – August 20. Chicago’s fabled 1960's nightclub, La Havana Madrid, comes bursting back to life in “an immersive, wholly enjoyable experience” (Chicago Reader) complete with live music and “enough dancing and bonhomie to tempt you away from your little table down front” (Chicago Tribune). Directed by Teatro Vista ensemble member Cheryl Lynn Bruce, the production was inspired by true stories of Cuban, Puerto Rican and Colombian immigrants who found refuge in the nightclub. Delgado leads the eight-member cast (a full list appears below) as a mystical woman who conjures stories and vibrant songs performed live onstage each night by Colombian-American musician Roberto "Carpacho" Marin and his band of 30 years, Carpacho y Su Super Combo.

La Havana Madrid appears July 21 - August 20 in the Owen Theatre (Opening Night is Wednesday, July 26 at 7:30pm). “My journey with La Havana Madrid is a dream come true. It has been an absolute joy and honor to share this story with my fellow Chicagoans and I am incredibly grateful that we get to keep the love alive this summer,” said playwright and co-star Sandra Delgado. “It is especially sweet to come home to Goodman Theatre, where I wrote La Havana Madrid as part of the Playwright's Unit in the 2015/2016 Season. In addition to Delgado, the eight-member cast also includes Teatro Vista ensemble members Tommy Rivera-Vega and Marvin Quijada; and newcomers Mike Oquendo, Donovan Diaz and Krystal Ortiz, who round out the cast as Cuban, Colombian and Puerto Rican patrons, staff and musicians who all met, danced, loved and lost at La Havana Madrid. Original cast members Cruz Gonzalez-Cadel and Phoebe González are unable to continue with the production and their roles are being recast for the Goodman remount. The design team includes Ashley Woods (set), Elsa Hiltner (costumes), Heather Sparling (lights), Mikhail Fiksel (sound), Liviu Pasare (projections and video design) and William Carlos Angulo (choreography).
 
A Brief History about La Havana Madrid Nightclub (Originally Located on Belmont and Sheffield)
 
In the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, Latinos from Caribbean countries such as Puerto Rico and Cuba settled all along Chicago's lakefront, from North Avenue to Devon. Although from different countries, music brought them together. Their shared rhythms—African rhythms—became the guaguanco, the mambo and the merengue. Now in the United States, these rhythms merged with traditional big band sounds and eventually became salsa. On the North side of Chicago, a handful of Latino music clubs opened up: Coco Loco on Lincoln Avenue, The Mirror Lounge on North Avenue and La Havana Madrid on Belmont and Sheffield. Luis “Witto” Aloma, a Cuban-born player for the Chicago White Sox, opened the club in the early 1960s to create a place for his Cuban friends to drink coffee and play cards and dominoes. Along the way, La Havana Madrid grew into a more lavish supper club with live Cuban musical acts, before it changed hands and Puerto Rican TV and radio host took over the club. La Havana Madrid closed in the late 1960s and later became the popular folk club The Quiet Knight. Today, the same second floor space is occupied by Milio’s Hair Studio.

Teatro Vista’s 2017/2018 season opens with The Goodman Theatre remount of La Havana Madrid. La Havana Madrid is Teatro Vista ensemble member Sandra Delgado's world premiere play with music that reimagines a long-gone Caribbean nightclub that drew throngs of newly-arrived Latinos to Chicago's north side in the 1960s. 

The Chicago Tribune called it "a heartfelt and fascinating musical tribute...the best selling show in Teatro Vista history." 

The Chicago Sun-Times raved "Highly Recommended...(it) chronicles the many different and widely unfamiliar layers of Latino immigrant life and history in Chicago."

Inspired by real life stories of those who flocked to the club to celebrate and remember, Teatro Vista's theatrical recreation of the lively 1960s music club features live music and immerses audiences in the sounds of that decade from the mambo to the new sound of salsa. 

In addition to conceiving and writing the play, Sandra Delgado plays the title role of La Havana Madrid, a mystical woman who conjures vibrant songs and true stories that bring life back to the fabled nightclub. Chicago comedian and producer Mike Oquendo portrays a character inspired by Tony Quintana, one of Chicago's Spanish language radio and television pioneers.
 
Colombian-American musician Roberto "Carpacho" Marin, joined by his band of 30 years, Carpacho y Su Super Combo, perform live at every show, chronicling the history of Caribbean Latino music from mambo to the birth of salsa. In fact, Carpacho's own story is one of the play's true vignettes.
 
Rounding out the cast as Cuban, Colombian and Puerto Rican patrons, staff and musicians who all met, danced, loved and lost at La Havana Madrid are Teatro Vista ensemble members Cruz Gonzalez-Cadel, Tommy Rivera-Vega and Marvin Quijada, and, in their Teatro Vista debuts, Donovan Diaz, Phoebe González and Krystal Ortiz. Due to extreme box office demand, Teatro Vista has added seats, more shows and a one-week extension for La Havana Madrid, Sandra Delgado's world premiere, live theater experience that reimagines the long-gone Caribbean nightclub that drew throngs of newly-arrived Latinos to Chicago's north side in the 1960's.

Following its extended run at Steppenwolf's 1700 Theatre, La Havana Madrid will be presented at The Miracle Center, 2311 N. Pulaski Rd. in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood, June 2-11, 2017 through the company's new program TEATRO VISTA, TEATRO VECINO (Spanish for "neighbor).

About La Havana Madrid

 

Step back in time to 1960's Chicago and into La Havana Madrid, the long-gone Caribbean nightclub that drew throngs of newly-arrived Latinos to the city's north side. A vibrant musical venue, La Havana Madrid became a cultural hub for these new Chicagoans. Inspired by real life stories of those who flocked to the club to celebrate and remember, this intimate recreation of the lively 1960's music club features live music and immerses you in the pulsing sounds of that decade from the mambo to the new sound of salsa.

                                               

La Havana Madrid is directed by Teatro Vista ensemble member Cheryl Lynn Bruce, who will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the League of Chicago Theatres on May 22.

 

In addition to conceiving and writing the play, Sandra Delgado also plays the title role of La Havana Madrid, a mystical woman who conjures vibrant songs and true stories that bring life back to the fabled North side nightclub. 

 

Chicago comedian and producer Mike Oquendo portrays Tony Quintana, the one-time owner of La Havana Madrid and host of the 1960s Chicago radio show "Tony's Latin A-Go-Go." 

 

Legendary Colombian-American musician Roberto "Carpacho" Marin, joined by his band of 30 years, Carpacho y Su Super Combo, perform live at every show. In fact, Carpacho's own story is one of the play's inspiring true vignettes. With Delgado as lead singer, Carpacho y Su Super Combo chronicles the history of Caribbean Latino music, live, from mambo to the birth of salsa. 

 

Rounding out the cast as Cuban, Colombian, Caribbean and Puerto Rican patrons, staff and musicians who all met, danced, loved and lost at La Havana Madrid are Teatro Vista ensemble members Cruz Gonzalez-Cadel, Tommy Rivera-Vega and Marvin Quijada, and, in their Teatro Vista debuts, Donovan Diaz, Phoebe González and Krystal Ortiz.

The design team that has crafted an intimate, immersive recreation of a lively 1960s music club - complete with cabaret seating, a bar, a dance floor and a small stage for the live band - are Ashley Woods (set), Elsa Hiltner (costumes),Heather Sparling (lights), Misha Fiksel (sound), Liviu Pasare (projections and video design) and William Carlos Angulo (choreography).

 

Following its run at Steppenwolf, Teatro Vista will present La Havana Madrid at The Miracle Center, 2311 N. Pulaski Rd., in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood. The Chicago Latino Theater Alliance is Production Sponsor of La Havana Madrid. Delgado received support from The Chicago Community Trust, a 2015 Joyce Award and a 3Arts 3AP Project Grant to support the development of La Havana Madrid. She developed the script as a member of the 2015-16 Playwright's Unit at Goodman Theatre. The Miracle Center residency is funded by The Chicago Community Trust and is part of Teatro Vista's new program TEATRO VISTA, TEATRO VECINO (Spanish for "neighbor).

               

 

Some history about La Havana Madrid

In the late 1950's and throughout the 1960's, Latinos from Caribbean countries such as Puerto Rico and Cuba settled all along Chicago's lakefront, from North Avenue to Devon.

Although from different countries, music brought them together. Their shared rhythms -  African rhythms - became the guaguanco, the mambo and the merengue. Now in the United States, these rhythms merged with traditional big band sounds and eventually became salsa. 

On the North side of Chicago, a handful of Latino music clubs opened up: Coco Loco on Lincoln Avenue, The Mirror Lounge on North Avenue and La Havana Madrid on Belmont and Sheffield, in the second floor space now occupied by Milio's Hair Studio. While the history of La Havana Madrid may be fuzzy, what is known is Cubans opened it in the early 1960's and the club became a busy melting pot for newly arrived Latinos in Chicago. It's believed La Havana Madrid closed in the mid-1970's.

 

 

About Teatro Vista

 

Teatro Vista (teatrovista.org) produces, develops and commissions plays that explore the wealth and variety of the human experience from a Latinx perspective. The company provides work and professional advancement opportunities for Latinx theatre artists, with special emphasis on the company's ensemble members, and seeks to enhance the curricular goals of Chicago students through theatre. 

 

Teatro Vista was recently celebrated as one of "Chicago's Cultural Leaders" by the Arts & Business Council of Chicago and received the League of Chicago Theatre's Artistic Leadership Award.                                                                        

Teatro Vista's primary focus is producing new works by Latinx theatre artists and presenting classic plays featuring artists of color. Its artistic vision is shaped by the company's ensemble members, a group of multi-generational, multi-ethnic and multi-disciplinary artists. They inform Teatro Vista's artistic aesthetic by devising original works as well as by selecting plays with themes that are engaging and relevant to Chicago's diverse population.

 

Teatro Vista founded in 1990 by Edward Torres and Henry Godinez. As Teatro Vista's first Artistic Director, Godinez guided the company during the formative years. He helped stage successful productions and establish vital relationships with other theatre companies and artists. When Godinez stepped down, Torres was appointed Artistic Director. Under Torres' direction, Teatro Vista used the stage to engage, connect and challenge audience members using the company's mission as his guide. In 2012, Torres moved to New York and the Board of Directors promoted longtime Associate Artistic Director Ricardo Gutiérrez to the position of Executive Artistic Director.  

 

In 2017, Sylvia Hevia joined Teatro Vista as Managing and Development Director. Previously, Hevia was Director of Marketing and Development of the International Latino Cultural Center and had her own multicultural event production company dedicated to bringing Latinx cultural events, performances and recording artists to Chicago.
