Concluding BrightSide's 14th season will be THE PRODUCERS, the longest running Broadway musical comedy ever and the winner of 12 Tony Awards – the most ever by a single production. Mel Brooks's musical was adapted from his 1967 film of the same name that starred Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. Like the film, the musical follows the hapless producers Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they attempt to make money by staging the biggest flop in history—only for their ridiculous musical, "Springtime for Hitler," to become a surprise hit. THE PRODUCERS ran on Broadway for six years, keeping audiences in stitches with its combination of visual and verbal humor, inventive and hilarious production numbers, and catchy songs. BrightSide Artistic Director Jeffrey Cass will direct, with Mary Grace Martens providing the choreography and Phil Videckis serving as Music Director. THE PRODUCERS will play from June 12-28, 2026, in The Theater at Meiley-Swallow Hall on the campus of North Central College in Naperville. 
 
Leading the cast are Scott Kelley of Schaumburg as Max Bialystock and Michael Metcalf as Leo Bloom. Kelley has been seen at BrightSide in such roles as Sidney in DEATHTRAP, The Narrator in last fall's THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, and Nick Bottom in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. Metcalf first appeared with BrightSide in JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT in 2018 and most recently was Freddie in BrightSide's CHESS IN CONCERT. Metcalf has played such leading roles around Chicago as Oliver Warbucks in ANNIE, Lord Farquaad in SHREK with Music Theater Works, and Frankie Valli in JERSEY BOYS at Mercury Theatre, for which he earned a Jeff nomination. Roger DeBris, the flamboyant director hired to stage "Springtime for Hitler," will be played by veteran actor John B. Boss of Chicago, who has been cast in that role in five previous productions, including the national tour. DeBris's assistant, Carmen Ghia, will be Michael John Lynch (also of Chicago), seen at BrightSide this season as Brad in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW and as Jean-Claude in PHANTOM. Myles Mattsey of New Lenox, seen in BrightSide's PHANTOM this past January and last summer as Coronel Ricci in Blank Theatre Company's PASSION, will play the eccentric "Springtime for Hitler" playwright Franz Liebkind. Amelia Tam of Evanston, seen in BrightSide's THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW earlier this season, will be Bialystock and Bloom's secretary Ulla Jacobson.
 
Also in the cast are Julie Abner Donahue (of Geneva), Jax Downs-Martinez (of Oswego), Justin Dudzik (of Joliet), Chris Frewen-Peña (of Bolingbrook), Erica Harrington (of Westchester), Sydnee Howes (of Chicago), Peter Kattner III (of Chicago), Athena Kopolos, Charlie Kungl (of Elmhurst), Lauren Mathews (of Chicago), Cheryl Newman (of Naperville), and John Salomone (of Shorewood). The design team includes Ariel Mozes (Scenic Design), Cheryl Newman (Costume Design), Kurt Ottinger (Lighting Design), Delaney Kosar (Props Design). Bill Delmonico is Technical Director.

THE PRODUCERS will be performed in The Theater at Meiley-Swallow Hall, North Central College, 31 S. Ellsworth, Naperville. Review: Jersey Boys at Mercury Theatre

‘Jersey Boys’ is back in Chicago, bringing with it a little East Coast to the Third Coast. The hit Broadway musical about the lives of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons played for over two years in the mid-00s at the CIBC Theater and helped establish Broadway in Chicago as more than just an importer of touring shows. Now ‘Jersey Boys’ will see another open-ended run at Mercury Theater.

Believe it or not, there was once a time when biographic, jukebox musicals were novel. While ‘Jersey Boys’ certainly wasn’t the first, it was one of the earliest and arguably better than some of the shlocky stuff plaguing Broadway these days. Digression aside, the music of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons effortlessly lends itself to musical theater. Afterall, Frankie Valli did provide the title track for the film version of ‘Grease’. 

Co-directed by L. Walter Stearns and Brenda Didier, this production is every bit as good as the Broadway in Chicago sit-down. Mercury’s revival scrubs off all that Broadway gloss and presents a grittier, if not more authentic version of this Italian-American flavored drama. Is it family friendly? Sure, if you don’t mind the ubiquitous use of the F-word akin to the mob wife aesthetic of ‘The Soprano’s’. 

Though Frankie Valli was the frontman and eventual breakout star of The Four Seasons, their origin story is told equally from all four players. However, Adrian Aguilar as Tommy DeVito commands the stage as the main narrator.

Few grown men can hit the notes Frankie Valli was capable of, but Michael Metcalf does so with seeming ease. To look at him (or hear his speaking voice), you’d never expect he could go that high, but that and his performance as an actor showcase what a multi-purpose talent he is.

‘Jersey Boys’ doesn’t often address the personal lives of the band members, but instead tells the story of how they came to be, their rise to fame, and all that comes with it. However, it’s not empty in the way that so many of these jukebox musicals end up being. That’s likely due to a book co-written by Marshall Brickman, who helped write some of Woody Allen’s most iconic films (‘Annie Hall’, ‘Manhattan’), and Tony Award winner Rick Elice. Brickman writes from a place of personal experience as he was working in the entertainment business around the same time as the head writer for Johnny Carson. The result is a really fun, ‘VH1 Behind the Music’ of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons.

Though Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons made bubblegum pop, their story is far from saccharine. What’s surprising about this story, and the likes of the Rat Pack, is how intertwined their successes were with organized crime. The title says it all. There’s something about this show that non-musical people will find really appealing, in the same way ‘Grease’ appeals to nearly everyone.

Wonderful performances, hot choreo, great costumes and a full-blast band make ‘Jersey Boys’ at Mercury a heavy hitter for the Wrigleyville theater company. You’ll be clapping in unison by the end (whether you want to or not).

Sometimes you just need to go green. No, not a vegan diet and compostable paper plates, though a little more of each would help the planet. Go green with Shrek: The Musical, which runs through the end of 2023 at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. Music Theater Works’ production, directed by Joanna McKenzie Miller, has many offbeat delights, including green-hued fart clouds blooming onto the upstage screen. Would those count as vegan and compostable? It doesn’t matter.

Based on the Dreamworks animated film Shrek, the musical pairs Jeanine Tesori, composer of such serious fare as Violet and Fun Home, with David Lindsay-Abaire, author of equally rigorous works such as Rabbit Hole and Kimberly Akimbo (which he and Tesori recently turned into a musical). With Shrek: The Musical, the creative team stays within unremarkable territory.

Taken on those safe terms, though, the show does not disappoint. The salty fairytale follows its ogre hero Shrek – who is cast off by his parents as a child and dwells alone in a swamp – and heroine Fiona – the princess who is cast off by her parents and grows up alone in a tower – to their happily ever after. Thanks to Lord Farquaad, the nasty royal who needs a queen to make him a king, Shrek and Fiona meet and conflict and fall in love with competing farts and belches.

Dana Pike as Fiona fills the stage with her rich voice, determined personality and droll humor, all of which align with particular power in “Morning Person.” While she clings to her quest to marry her fantasy man on a steed, she’s also a pragmatist who adapts to circumstances that contradict her fictional assumptions.

Jordan DeBose lets us love him as smelly Shrek (though a few of his lines got muffled in the Scottish accent). Eustace J. Williams as Shrek’s sidekick Donkey makes his incessant jabber always entertaining. Full-sized Michael Metcalf plays pint-sized Farquaad with such finesse, it’s easy to forget the actor does it entirely on his knees. And Michaela Shapira as Pinocchio seems to have hinges in her elbows.

A word about the set, a sure sign that stage technology marches on even as love stories remain timeless. The vast upstage screen uses motion graphics to chart shifting scenes and moods, from placid sunflowers to molten lava. Media designer Anthony Churchill’s projections mostly follow traditional storybook illustrations, but they are likely, in their sheer un-trendiness, to keep audience members of all ages transfixed.

It's been a hell of a year. Time for a few “F’s” that can be printed, like family, friendly, fantasy, free parking and, okay, farts. As a distraction from dire world news for adults and a variation on Christmas culture for the kids, Shrek: The Musical does the job with lots of jolly and its own shade of green.
