Coed Prison Sluts

Let’s just start by saying Coed Prison Sluts is certainly not your average musical. Claimed to be the longest running musical in Chicago, this Annoyance Theatre production takes its viewers inside a prison – a very unusual prison to say the least. For starters, the prison is coed (obviously) and that in itself makes for interesting interaction. Add the fact that the prison psychologist is a drag queen, the warden is oblivious to the obvious and a creepy clown terrorizes the inmates and you have a show like no other.

Each featured prisoner has his or her own issue from one believing she is a famous actress to a misplaced 12-year old boy. Each character had their fair share of funny moments, though it was Mikala Bierma as “Alice” and Scott Goldstein as “Dr. Bello” whose comedic presentation really stood out. Bierma was out right funny and was consistently able to generate audience laughs in every one of her scenes with even the slightest of facial expressions. At the same time, Goldstein delivered a strong performance as the sharp-witted, cross-dressing psychologist with a pension for hypnotizing his subjects for his own benefit.

What this show has is plenty of vulgar jokes, what it does not have is unforgettable, well-crafted songs, though the pianist does a terrific job at creating mood music behind each scene. The musical numbers included a few laughs, but beyond that, didn’t seem to really add much to the show as a whole.

The theatre itself is quaint, comfortable and provides a fun atmosphere, which is almost worth the trip alone. Though the plot is nowhere to be found, Coed Prison Sluts is silly and still consists of enough funny moments to entertain most, making it worth checking out.
