kathygriffinKathy Griffin, Hollywood's most self deprecating redheaded comedienne, graced the historic Chicago Theatre with her presence (Thursday-Sunday if you want to be technical). Yours truly was in attendance Sunday night with my mother as my date (feel free to insert your own joke here). The self proclaimed D-Lister regaled the masses with her tales of being an Oak Park native, weaseling her way into A-List events for the purpose of spicing up her act and of course providing the dirt on some of the most notorious celebrities to date. As a sample of her wares, Kathy confessed to having a rather scandalous affair with David Letterman. Let's just say it was a threesome that involved a kitten. Per her request, she'd appreciate if that information was leaked to the tabloids.

Aside from telling heartwarming stories of threesomes, she dished on her box wine loving mother and the dirt on Hollywood's elite like Oprah. Given that she was on Oprah's turf, Kathy informed the audience she was wearing a Kevlar vest before attacking the beloved icon. No one was safe. Not even children were spared from being mocked (Normally I would be opposed to picking on children but I highly doubt the Gosselin children have a prayer of being normal in any way, shape or form). Continuing to go against the grain, she even defended Kayne West in the Kayne West/ Taylor Swift VMA debacle stating it was only a "f-cking VMA" and she would kill to have that kind of publicity. She's plotting to get 50 Cent shoot her at the Emmys. Her self- serving yet unique perspective makes her a true stand out.

Oprah was not the only high profile celebrity to take a beating. Kathy reminded the audience of Barbara Walters's preference for Astroglide and recalled hounding her in the bathroom before an appearance on The View. She referred to the plastic surgeon as the dentist and proceeded to blab about all the "dental work" stars like LaToya Jackson, Kathie Lee Gifford and even what she has had done to herself. To put it simply, nothing was off limits and no celebrity was above being ridiculed.

Kathy's career can only be compared to a rollercoaster. Most of the time she finds herself banned from talk shows thanks to her mouth. When she's successful, her bans are lifted so for the moment she's allowed back on shows like The View and The Late Show with David Letterman (although her threesome confession might get her banned again). For an hour and a half, Kathy Griffin was unapologetic while reveling in all her profane glory.

Griffin relates with the audience thus sparing them from her sharp tongue. She even seemed gracious and thanked the crowd for buying tickets to see her in this economy (tickets ranged from $49-$69). Sure part of her persona is shrewd and abrasive but she still manages to exude something likable. My only complaint with the performance was with Kathy leaving a loose end. She baited her spectators with a juicy story involving Kate Gosselin numerous times but was never able to finish it. As someone who personally finds Kate Gosselin to be an emasculating succubus, I would have enjoyed hearing Kathy's take on her.

For those who don't know jack about Kathy, she has made a name for herself by talking trash about Hollywood. In most scenarios, Kathy appeals to women (from sorority sisters to those who fancy watching Lifetime, E!, Bravo and/or Oxygen) and a group she loving refers to as her gays. Her history is compelling in the sense that it shows her determination to make it even when she didn't fit the mold. After spending 8 years with the legendary Groundlings, she accepted improv was not her forte and tried her hand at stand up. Although she floundered in the beginning, Kathy continued to work the L.A. comedy club circuit and honed her craft.  Her notoriety grew and with that came roles and cameos in shows like Seinfeld and Suddenly Susan and films like Pulp Fiction.  Arguably Kathy has found the most success on her reality show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List. The D-List landed her two Emmys. Thanks to her recently released autobiography Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin, she can now add New York Times' Best Selling author to her repertoire. As expected, she shamelessly promoted her book throughout her performance.

Love her or hate her, this gossipmonger is here to stay. If you're a gossip queen or any other variation of a queen, check out Kathy Griffin in person, via the D-List or read her memoir. She's willing to dish any way you take her.
